"I hope that some day the sun will shine again, and you'll release me too" Grace Potter wrote this song about her love life, but right before she released the song the man she co-wrote the song with died and the song took on a whole new meaning. In light of current events, the song transforms again. If you frame the lyrics as, "Dear COVID,-" a new narrative emerges. There is a lot to grieve right now. Loss of plans, stability, income, and- most tragically- life. Music has always been a way for me to process greif. Whether it's through writing my own music or singing my heart out to someone else's lyrics. Sing out, reach out, help out where possible, even if that's sitting at home to keep others safe. Dear Prudence (Cover of the Beatles) by Rebecca Reid I LOVE this song. This cover is inspired by the version of Dear Prudence on the Accross the Universe Soundtrack. A little more bass heavy than the original with some rhythmic piano and synth flare! I was a teenager when the movie Accross the Universe came out and it made the music of the Beatles more relatable and accessible to me than the original music. I haven't shared any of my original music on this page yet because I've got songs in production with a producer in Edmonton and they're not ready yet! (Soooo soon though, so stay tuned) But I wrote this song yesterday and it’s called, “We are one.” I felt that putting out this song in the form that it's in (recorded in my basement and produced by yours truly) was appropriate given the relevance of it's message. In so many ways we, as a global community, have come together over the past few weeks which has been amazing to see. However, there are also so many people who are terrified either working on the front lines or sitting at home trying to abide by social isolation. As a medical student I usually work at the hospital, but I’m not able to do that right now because it’s not safe, which makes me feel like I’m letting down my teammates and my patients. While I’ve been trying to take full advantage of my unanticipated ‘vacation’ to catch up on sleep and vitamin D, I have also been feeling helpless and useless. On the bright side, however, when I have time at home I have a tendency to write music. When put in dark places human will create. The artists draw, the writers write, the song writers sing. So, here is a song for anyone who needs an anthem right now. To my friends and family, to my healthcare colleagues who are putting their lives on the line, to those who are doing their part by staying put, this song is for you.
